Anyone that has ever gotten engaged is familiar with the onslaught of questions that fly their way as soon as they announce they’re getting married.

After everyone’s done oohing and ahhing over the engagement ring, brides-to-be should expect to be interrogated about a wedding date or their dress. They should even expect questions about who they’re drafting to be in the wedding party. People want to know everything, and they want to know it now!

If you’re planning a wedding may not have had time to work all of that out, and that’s fine. You don’t need to get up the next day and pick a wedding date or round up your entourage for some dress shopping. Relax and take some time to enjoy just being engaged, but there is one thing you need to do ASAP after he pops the question.

The first thing you absolutely need to do once you get engaged is to set a timetable, according to TheKnot.com. This means that you need to get a general idea of when you’d like to have your wedding, which can be as simple as figuring out which season in which you prefer to jump the broom.

Most couples usually give themselves a year to plan their wedding , but engagements can range from 6 to 18 months on average.

A good rule to consider is how far in advance you may need to book your ideal wedding venue, officiant, and band (or DJ). Also remember that wedding dresses take at least nine month to order–and that’s if you go dress shopping immediately. Some brides wait a few weeks before they start heading to the bridal salons. Don’t forget to give yourself some time to shop around for different vendors!

Once you get a timeline hammered down, wedding planning will be much easier.
