The Indiana State Fair opened today with hot air balloons taking off over Indianapolis skies, beautiful weather and freebies for college students. This first day is “College I.D. Day” where students with active identification cards get free admission into the fair. As festivities got underway with new foods and new features like, deep fried corn, fresh black bean burgers and a 196-plug recharging lounge at the west end of the Harvest Pavilion, not all of the action going on is inside the fairground’s gates.
There’s new development in the neighborhood around the fair. Officials also broke ground Friday morning shortly after 10 a.m., coinciding with opening day at the state fair, on a new $13.5 million housing development nearby. They’re calling this 50-unit living space “Overlook at the Fairgrounds.” It will be housed in the vacant Homer J. Williamson Chocolate Factory. The new urban living space will feature a rooftop terrace, workout rooms, balconies that overlook the fair and an event space located close to public transportation.
