Indiana Color of Pride events kick off this evening with a reception and a special screening of Mo’Nique’s film “Blackbird.” The timing of the organization’s celebration events come weeks after Pride celebrations in Indianapolis where success was fueled by taking a stance against perceived discrimination from the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. It’s also coincidentally well-timed a day after Caitlyn Jenner made her most public appearance accepting the Arthur Ashe Courage Award from sports network ESPN during their ESPYs award ceremony on Wednesday night. In her speech, the former Olympian emotionally asked for respect for transgender people. In an #AccessIndy exclusive, I speak with the executive director of Brothers United, Inc., the organizer and host of Indiana Color of Pride about the event here in Indy, the need for a Pride event from the African-American LGBT perspective and the black transgender community with trailblazers like Laverne Cox and their impact on Hoosier transgenders.
