Step 1

Be quiet, even when it is hard to do and you would rather not keep be quiet. This is the easiest way to stop complaining.

  • Step 2

Look at the sunny side of life. Think about how pretty it is outside, how much you have going for you and how lucky you are in so many ways.

  • Step 3

Think about how many unhappy people there are in the world–how many have wants, unmet needs and who are poor. Think about all the people who are incarcerated justly and unjustly. Think about how your life really isn’t so bad after all and not only that, but you might just have something to give to bring people up.

  • Step 4

Give yourself a break. Take a walk or workout to get your body moving. Pet a cat or dog. Plant some flowers.

  • Step 5

Stop complaining if you are a big complainer. Decide right now today that you will take a week or two and not say anything at all unless it is positive, encouraging or uplifting.

  • Step 6

Make yourself feel better. Buy some new clothes, eat something special, get your hair styled or polish your car. Why complain when you have choices like these you can make?

  • Step 7

Think about the people around you. Think about how you may be a thorn in their side by your complaining. Or if you think you are the victim–think about how you are changing nothing by complaining. If you stop complaining, think about how you might just clear the air long enough to figure out what you might be able to do to make positive changes instead of just complaining all the time.
