After 15 seasons, American Idol is closing the curtain on the franchise that brought music and talent into our homes since 2002.

The stars came out for the big finale. OG hosts Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul and Randy Jackson surprised fans at the event. Jennifer Lopez premiered her new single “Aint Your Mama.” Kelly Clarkson graced the screen with a pre-recorded performance for the crowd. Even Barack Obama made a video cameo appearance, urging Americans to invest in our political voting system in the same way we invested energy into making the American Idol voting process democratic.

A notable performance came from American Idol alum Fantasia Barrino, Jennifer Hudson and Latoya London with a soul shaking rendition of “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

Ultimately, it was Trent Harmon, who stunned audiences for weeks with his sultry voice and energetic delivery, that took the final Idol crown.

“I know that I have a God-given ability, but I didn’t want to take it for granted. I wanted to work so, so hard, and she pushed me to do it,” he said tearfully.

He beat out the effervescent La’Porsha Renea, who brought heartfelt performances to the stage week after week.

For a show that impacted millions of people all around the country, the final star-studded episode was the perfect send off for the franchise.

We will miss you, American Idol.
