Simon mall employees have created an online petition to force the Indianapolis-based company to change it’s decision to open their malls on Thanksgiving. More than 16,000 signatures have been collected by Tuesday.

Amber Baumgart, a Simon malls employee from Green Bay, Wisc., who started the campaign, wrote in her online petition:

“Shouldn’t malls, which are family friendly establishments, have good morals and standards that fully support the American family and their values? This is a time for families to come together and enjoy a meal. To catch up. To have fun. Why are mall employees any different?”

A growing number of retailers like Wal-Mart and Target have decided to open locations on Thanksgiving.

A spokesman for Simon said the company is aware of the online campaign but has no plans to re-examine its decision to open on Thanksgiving.

These Simon properties in Indiana — Castleton Square Mall, Bloomington’s College Mall, Greenwood Park Mall and Muncie Mall — will open at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day and stay open through Friday.

Clay Terrace and Hamilton Town Center will open at midnight Friday. Circle Centre mall, Washington Square and the Fashion Mall at Keystone Crossing will open at 7 a.m. Friday.
