A Bigger, Modern Mass Transit System
The push for a bigger, more modern mass transit system in central Indiana picked up speed at the Statehouse Monday passing in the Indiana House and now on it’s way to the Senate for a vote. The bill is calling for a referendum in November of next year allowing the creation of a transit authority and a point three percent income tax increase.
Drug Tests for Welfare Recipients
People on welfare in Indiana would have to undergo drug tests under a measure now on it’s way to the Indiana senate. It’s an effort to make sure that the poor who receive tax dollars aren’t spending it on illegal drugs.
I-65 Crash
Investigators say the semi that hit the Virginia Street overpass on Friday wasn’t loaded properly. According to Indiana State Police, the elevator equipment on the flat bed was too tall to fit underneath the bridge. I-65 northbound and I-70 eastbound were closed all weekend while crews reinforced the overpass with steel plates.
Tenn Driving Deaths
Teen driver deaths were up 19-percent in the first half of last year, according to a new report. The Governors Highway Safety Association says there were 240 deaths of 16 and 17 year-old drivers in the first six months of 2012. That’s up from just over 200 fatalities for the same time in 2011.
500 Trees To Be Cut Down
Five-hundred trees will soon be cut down on the city’s northeast side. The Department of Public Works says the trees are infected with the emerald ash borer. The tree removal project is expected to take about three-months.
