Earlier this season, after defeating a ranked Texas team in a 48-45 thriller, some thought West Virginia could possibly be on their way to playing in the national championship game. Geno Smith was a front-runner to win the Heisman Trophy, and things were looking good for WVU.

However, things took a turn for the worst and West Virginia went on to lose six of their last eight games. To make matters worse they were pummeled by a very mediocre Syracuse team in the Pinstripe Bowl, 38-14.

West Virginia allowed two safeties, racked up a whopping 106 yards’ worth of penalties and didn’t convert any third-down attempts. Unfortunately for Geno Smith his last season as a Mountaineer ended with an unexceptional 192-yard, two-touchdown effort.

Adding insult to injury, the Weirton Daily Times in Weirton, WV, made a typo which read “WVU loses bowel”. Although this was obviously a mistake, many will say it is a fitting headline for a team that lost six of its last eight games and got blown out by an unremarkable Syracuse team.
