During the campaign, President Obama was not been shy about his ill feelings for Donald Trump, but on Thursday he met with the President Elect (and loudspeaker of the Birther Movement) in the White House. Apparently it was cordial.
According to the New York Times, the two men met face to face for the first time for a 90-minute discussion in the Oval Office—they even shook hands.
“I want to emphasize to you, Mr. President-elect, that we now are going to want to do everything we can to help you succeed because if you succeed, then the country succeeds,” Obama told Trump.
Trump, who called POTUS a “disaster” and a “founder of ISIS” was gracious when meeting the President in person.
“I have great respect,” Trump said.
“We discussed a lot of different situations, some wonderful, and some difficulties. I very much look forward to dealing with the president in the future, including counsel.”
Obama and Trump met alone and afterwards the president told reporters the two had an “excellent” and “wide-ranging” conversation covering domestic and foreign policy issues, NBC News noted. Trump also said he looked forward to working with the President and would seek his counsel.
Trump’s wife, Melania, was also at the White House to meet with First Lady Michelle Obama, who hosted her to tea. The two talked about raising children in TheWhite House and being good parents.
“We had an excellent conversation with her as well,” the president said of Melania.
