The city’s new downtown transportation hub is up and running. Riders were able to use it for the first time Sunday after a grand opening ceremony, though today is the first full day of operation. The Julia M. Carson Transit Center, named in honor of the district’s late-congresswoman, features 19 covered bus bays with real-time bus information, a waiting room that offers heat or air conditioning in the appropriate season, message boards, ticket sales and free Wi-Fi. This new hub for IndyGo Buses is located on the south side of Washington Street between Delaware and Alabama. IndyGo is offering free rides on all routes through Monday, July 4, including their Open Door para-transit service.

The Dalai Lama and Lady Gaga are urging kindness in today’s violent and increasingly angry world. The two appeared together on Sunday during the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which is being held in downtown Indianapolis. The Dalai Lama spoke of the importance of being compassionate, while Lady Gaga noted that evil is winning while we’re busy trying to figure out which group is causing the problem. Democratic presumptive presidential nominee, Hillary Clinton, also spoke at the conference, saying cities are “where things are happening and getting done.” Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Mayor of Baltimore, serves as President of the U.S. Conference of Mayors.

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer says his city is slowly recovering from the deadliest mass public shooting in modern U.S. history. Dyer also appeared Sunday here in the city at annual mayors’ meeting, and says it’s been uplifting to see the response from other cities showing support following the attack on a gay nightclub earlier this month.  He said Orlando is coping and that people are supporting each other. Dyer added he was motivated to speak at the conference to warn mayors from across the country that these type of incidents are possible anywhere. Dyer avoided discussion about the hot topic of gun control, choosing instead to focus his efforts on helping Orlando recover from the shooting.

Speaking of support, Indy’s efforts continued over the weekend. The City Market joined forces with Indy Pride on to honor the victims of the mass shooting in Orlando’s Pulse night club early this month. The group held a letter writing event at the market, #WriteWithLove, which was inspired by the recent story of JetBlue Airline passengers penning letters to the grandmother of a victim of the Pulse Night Club shooting while she was onboard traveling to his funeral in Orlando. As a part of the event, organizers delivered dozens of hand-written messages to Mayor Dyer at the U.S. Mayor’s Conference Sunday. The event comes two weeks after a gunman killed 49 people and injured 53 in Dyer’s city.

A former middle school teaching assistant is accused of having sex with a 15-year-old girl. Demario Thomas was arrested Saturday. IMPD says he met the girl at the school where he worked, but didn’t have sex with her until after he resigned in April. A police department spokesman says Thomas admitted knowing the girl’s age. Officials haven’t disclosed what school Thomas was working at when he met the young victim.

A man is under arrest, accused of toting an AK-47 in downtown Indianapolis. Police say Dominick Smith also had a nine millimeter handgun and drugs on him–a mason jar full of pot. He was pulled over Sunday morning in the 300 block of South Meridian Street.

An investigation is underway at an Indianapolis apartment complex where a man was found dead. The discovery was made in the 3800 block of North Pennsylvania Street Sunday afternoon. Police say the 44-year-old man was found by his roommate. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The U.S. Supreme Court is striking down a restrictive abortion law in Texas. The ruling was 5-3. The law prompted a dramatic reduction in the number of abortion clinics in the Lone Star State. Proponents argued that the law was necessary to protect the health of women. Critics said it was actually designed to shut down abortion clinics by forcing them to adhere to burdensome new regulations.

A Minnesota judge will hold a second hearing today over Prince’s fortune. The hearing will reportedly deal with the rules for how to determine which of Prince’s relatives will inherit his belongings and fortune.  Under Minnesota law, any children of the deceased would be the rightful heir.
