A new survey is outing those downright ridiculous excuses people use for calling in sick. CareerBuilder’s list of the ten worst excuses for phoning in a sick is led by an employee’s claim that his grandmother had poisoned him with ham. Another worker called in for getting stuck under the bed, while someone simply said the universe was telling him to take the day off.
While doctor’s orders may be an actual reason for staying home, one person told her employer a doctor had told her to get more vitamin D, so she decided to spend the day taking in the sun at the beach. Meantime, the survey also found that employers are getting smart when it comes to finding out if those outlandish excuses are real or fake. A third of employers say they’ve done some detective work when dealing with a sick worker. Some employers simply ask for a doctor’s note, while others are fond of checking workers’ social media, as well as calling to check up on supposedly sick workers.
