President Obama on Thursday will honor visionaries who have made their mark in the realm of arts and humanities. Eighteen people, including author Stephen King and actress Sally Field, and three institutions, will receive a National Medal of Arts or a National Humanities Medal at the White House. “Ranging from literature, theater, and visual arts to arts presentation and philanthropy, these artists and organizations have broadened our horizons and enriched our lives. I join the President in congratulating them and celebrating what the arts do for America,” said NEA chairman Jane Chu in a statement. Other recipients include theater director Ping Chong, educator Tobias Wolff, and actress Miriam Colón, who charted a path for Hispanics to pursue a career in acting. Read more.


Diddy Will Avoid Charges in UCLA Incident

The saga surrounding hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs’ UCLA altercation will soon come to an end. According to reports, Diddy will not face criminal charges after allegedly fighting with the school’s football coach regarding his son. In June, he was arrested for felony assault with a deadly weapon, battery, and making terroristic threats. The Los Angeles County District Attorney lowered the case to a misdemeanor prosecution. Diddy was recently granted a hearing to find other ways to resolve the issue that doesn’t involve misdemeanor complaints. “It’s an informal proceeding that will determine if there are alternatives to filing charges – which could include restitution, anger management classes or community service,” said City Attorney spokesman Rob Wilcox. New Species Connected to Humans Discovered in South Africa

According to scientists, a new species of human ancestors have been discovered in South Africa. Bone fragments from the new species, which is being called “Homo naledi,” were found in Johannesburg. Geologists are claiming that the group buried their dead, a behavior only associated with humans. “There is no damage from predators, there is no sign of a catastrophe. We had to come to the inevitable conclusion that Homo naledi, a non-human species of hominid, was deliberately disposing of its dead in that dark chamber. Why, we don’t know,” said Lee Berger, a professor at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. Read more.
