There’s a silver lining in the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity racist video flap at the University of Oklahoma.  The community has come together to donate to a fund set up for the frat house’s long-term chef. Identified only as “Howard,” media +wire reports indicate that he lost his job after the national office of SAE immediately closed OU’s chapter of the frat and suspended its members in response to their racist actions.  “Howard” has served at the fraternity house as chef for more than a decade. Blake Burkhart set up an account for Howard on crowd funding website “IndieGoGo” to help him financially. Burkhart stated on the site, “…through some cruel twist of fate, he has to lose the job that he has held for over a decade. He is going to lose his job because of a bus full of racist kids.” Burkhart lists details in his summary that indicate he has intimate knowledge of the internal workings of the frat house which though unconfirmed, seem to to point to him being one of the fraternity’s alumni.

The current frat members were caught on video singing a song on a bus trip about never letting blacks into the frat using derogatory terms. That video has gone viral, and demonstrations have occurred on campus against the frat’s behavior. The university has acted swiftly as well and is also kicking SAE off their campus officially with the university’s president citing a zero tolerance policy. A continued investigation of frat members is forthcoming. “Howard,” by the way, is a black man.
