This will mark D’Angelo’s first time on “SNL” and his first televised appearance since releasing “Black Messiah” last month. While D’Angelo provides the musical entertainment Saturday night, “Whiplash” actor J.K. Simmons will serve as the night’s host. “Black Messiah” is D’Angelo’s first album since the release of his sophomore project, “Voodoo,” in 2000. “Black Messiah” opened at number five after selling 117-thousand copies in its first week.
