On the first drive of the BCS Championship Game, Alabama moved the ball like nobody else this season had on Notre Dame’s defense.
A 29-yard pass. A 10-yard run followed by a 15-yard penalty. Another Notre Dame penalty. A 20-yard touchdown run by Eddie Lacy.
And just like that, it was pretty obvious where this game was headed. Alabama was just too good against a Fighting Irish team that came in 12-0. Notre Dame, which hadn’t given up more than 26 points in a game all year, gave up 28 in the first half. Notre Dame gave up 10 touchdowns in 12 games, but allowed six to Alabama in a 42-14 loss.
For the third time in four years, Alabama is the national champion. The Crimson Tide is a legitimate dynasty under coach Nick Saban.
With players like quarterback AJ McCarron, running back T.J. Yeldon, receiver Amari Cooper and linebacker C.J. Mosley either saying they’re coming back or unable to go to the NFL yet, Alabama should be the top team in the preseason poll next season. The Crimson Tide’s game on Sept. 14 at Texas A&M – the only team to beat Alabama this season, which will have Heisman-winning quarterback Johnny Manziel back – will go a long way in determining next season’s national champ.
This season’s title game was a total domination. Alabama rolled up more than 500 yards running back Eddie Lacy put on a show with his bruising running style. McCarron was sharp. The defense was stifling.
Notre Dame didn’t lose once during the regular season. Against Alabama, the Fighting Irish never stood a chance.
