Pieces of the casting puzzle for Lifetime’s TV movie Betty and Coretta are coming together as Malik Yoba has been tapped to play Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The 44-year-old actor shared the exciting news with his fans via Facebook.

“I am feeling incredibly honored , just got cast as MLK JR in the Lifetime movie “Betty and Corretta” [sic] playing opposite Angela Bassett as “Corretta”…I am determined to do his legacy proud!!! GOD IS GOOD!!! But with me just rocking the mustache my 10 year old son keeps saying “Dad you look like a deputy! All you need is a brown uniform, and a hat!” Where do kids get this stuff? LOL!!!”

As previously reportedAngela Bassettwill take on the role of Coretta Scott Kingwhile Mary J. Blige will play Dr. Betty Shabazz. The role of Malcolm X has yet to be announced.

The film, previously titled Parallel Lives, will tell the stories of Betty and Coretta as they continue their lives as single mothers after the assassinations of their husbands. Emmy Award winner Ruby Dee will also be featured in the film as a historical witness to narrate the women’s stories.

Production on Betty and Coretta begins this month.
