In the national conversation about gay bashing that has been taking place since last year, the difficulties of black teenagers who want to come out is rarely mentioned. The African-American community, rightly or wrongly, is viewed as having even more issues with gay children than the larger population. Gay teens are often rejected for foster care placements on the basis of their orientation or treated badly when they are placed.

A new entrant in the discussion is the film “Pariah,” which premiered at Sundance last year, winning the festival’s Excellence in Cinematography Award. Written and directed by Dee Rees, the Brooklyn-based film was executive produced by Spike Lee. The film centers around Alike (Adepero Oduye), a 17-year-old girl who’s just discovering that she’s a lesbian.
