A couple in a healthy relationship should value individualism.

  • Develop a trusting relationship by using honesty from the start. Address past issues with each other by actively listening and keeping an open mind. Also practice truthfulness in even minor situations to prove to your partner that he can fully trust you. Give him trust and avoid questioning and doubting all that he tells you. Suspicion and distrust will crumble the foundation of a new relationship.

  • Communicate with respect even in situations of conflict. The manner of handling disagreements in the beginning of a relationship will set the stage for conflict resolution in the future. Decide what concerns you need to address and calmly share them with your partner. Actively listen to his needs and work together on finding rational and fair solutions. Nagging, name calling and holding grudges will put strain on the relationship and drive a wedge between you two.

  • Take time for yourself and give him time as well to avoid an overly dependent relationship. You and your new man should spend time away from each other while hanging with friends or exploring hobbies and personal goals. You can each carry on a self-reliant lifestyles by finding sources of happiness other than your relationship. Spending time apart and having separate interests will help you both maintain independence and enjoy your special time together.
