Start by listing the positives.You should let him or her know that you think they are a nice person, and list a few good qualities they possess. This will lessen the blow of rejection they are about to receive.
Be honest. Don’t give this person a false sense of hope if you already know there’s no chance you’d date them. Wasting time with excuses will do exactly what you should try not to do–hurt their feelings.
Reassure this person that they will find a better match for them. Just because you’re saying no doesn’t mean that you have to be nasty about turning them down. Let them know that you two don’t fit, but reassure them that their fit is out there.
Applaud them for having the courage to ask you out, and remind them how difficult it is to do that. Since you’re turning them down, you should try to soften the blow by complimenting them on their bravery.
Explain that you’re not interested in anything more than a friendship with them, but tell them how flattered you are. Be polite and courteous as you turn him or her down.
