Issa Rae Sued for Alleged Script Theft in Hit Film
Issa Rae, beloved for her creative genius and cultural influence, is now in the middle of a legal storm. The Issa Rae film lawsuit centers on her latest box office hit One of Them Days, which three Los Angeles-based writers claim is a direct copy of their 2020 screenplay One of Those Days.
According to the suit, the trio shopped their script around in 2023, and it allegedly landed in the hands of someone who worked on Rae’s Emmy-nominated series Insecure. Just weeks after they were told “no,” Rae’s film—starring Keke Palmer and SZA—was announced. The title? Nearly identical. The plot, tone, and character arcs? Strikingly similar, say the writers.
The film grossed more than $51 million, and now Rae, Sony, TriStar, and screenwriter Syreeta Singleton are all named in the federal lawsuit. A seasoned screenwriter brought in for analysis claims the overlap is no coincidence.
