Raphael Saadiq Had a Spiritual Experience Working on ‘Sinners’

In the Afrofuturist concept of “rhythm travel” detailed in Amiri Baraka’s short-story collection, “Tales of the Out & the Gone,” a man can journey through music to explore legacies past, present, and future. Director Ryan Coogler’s new box-office hit, “Sinners,” pays homage to the blues and its significance within Black communities, with a haunting original song, “I Lied to You,” tracing the genre’s roots back to Africa. Veteran songwriter Raphael Saadiq collaborated on the track, drawing on his diverse music background to capture the essence of the blues. Saadiq’s involvement in the film reflects a deep connection to the blues and a commitment to honoring its legacy, as showcased in the powerful scene featuring Miles Caton’s performance of the song.
