Good Day to you on this National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day…

Indiana House Democrats say they have an alternative way to raise money for road funding without increasing the gas tax. Their proposal, unveiled on Monday, would require all sales taxes collected from gasoline purchases be spent only on roads.  It would also freeze future corporate income tax cuts and re-prioritize money collected in reversions through agencies cutting “waste, fraud and abuse.”

Indianapolis Metro Police took three people into custody early Tuesday morning in connection with a robbery spree on the city’s east side. There were multiple robberies reported in the area near 38th Street and Mitthoeffer Road Monday night. These arrests according to police are also possibly linked to shootings that happened during a couple of those robberies–one shooting at Hacienda Apartments in that area and the other at Spanish Oaks Apartments. Police say they’ll release more details later on Tuesday.

IMPD officials report that it looks like the latest shooting on the south side started as a home invasion. Officers found two people shot on Monday at a home on East Hanna Avenue just before 5 p.m. Police say it looks like one person is the victim and the other is the suspect.

Indiana University is asking the FBI to take a look at white supremacist fliers posted on their Bloomington campus. A group called Identity Europa admitted on Monday to posting the fliers. IU Provost Lauren Robel said the school called the FBI to investigate, and is reminding students that IU “stands together as a community” and won’t be intimidated.

The man accused of kidnapping and killing an Owen County toddler will soon learn his fate. Kyle Parker pleaded guilty last Friday to the 2016 death Shaylyn Ammerman, in exchange for a recommended sentence of 60-years in prison. As part of his plea deal, several other charges were dropped, including rape, child molesting, aggravated battery, strangulation, obstruction of justice and failure to report.

Trump\'s Selection For Education Secretary Betsy DeVos Testifies During Her Senate Confirmation Hearing

Source: Chip Somodevilla / Getty

Betsy DeVos is now the U.S. Education Secretary–a victory for the GOP by the slimmest of margins. Former Indiana Governor, and now Vice-President Mike Pence in a historic move, cast the deciding vote today after the Senate ended in a 50-50 tie to confirm DeVos. Two Republicans voted against President  Donald Trump’s nominee, forcing Pence to cast the first tie-breaking vote in history for a Cabinet nomination. DeVos’ confirmation comes after Democrats held the floor throughout the night, voicing opposition to the the school choice advocate serving in the role for the nation’s schools and trying to convince another GOP senator to join them in that opposition.

A federal appeals court takes up arguments on President Trump’s travel ban today. The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals will hear arguments by the U.S. Department of Justice and the states of Washington and Minnesota. A federal judge in Seattle last week issued a temporary restraining order to block Trump’s executive order banning people from seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the U.S.

Trump thinks it’s a matter of simple common sense to have a temporary travel ban on people from seven Muslim-majority countries. The President told the press Tuesday morning that the court case challenging his ban is a big case, but that his side is well-represented. He said his executive order is important for the security of the country, and added that ISIS has vowed to infiltrate the U.S. through the immigration process Trump said he hopes the court case will not have to go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly says he regrets President Trump’s travel ban executive order was implemented so quickly. Kelly told a Congressional hearing on border security today that he considers the order, “lawful and constitutional” but that he regretted the speed with which it was rolled out. Kelly feared that without the order, people could have come into the U.S. to do harm to the country. He says he shoulders all the responsibility and that a delay would have allowed him to talk to members of Congress before it was implemented.
