John Gregg is in spotlight in Indiana as Mike Pence hits national stage.
Republican headlines don’t dominate the race for Indiana Governor. No, they don’t. Democrat John Gregg said he received a $500,000 donation from the Democratic Governors’ Association. He revealed the half-million dollar contribution to members of the press Tuesday. Gregg is still waiting to see who his opponent will be this fall. He says with Mike Pence running for vice president, the governor’s seat is open.

Speaking of Pence, now that the business of making Donald Trump and Pence the official GOP presidential and vice presidential nominees is out of the way with Tuesday evening’s roll call votes, it’s now time for Pence to step into the national spotlight. That’s something will do tonight at day three of the Republican National Convention when he’ll accept the nomination in one of the most anticipated speeches of the event. His mission is expected to be two-fold–one, introduce himself to a national audience and two, stand as a conservative pillar for the Trump campaign.
John Gregg may not have to wait long to see who will become his challenger. And, when he sees who emerges, two congress members from Indiana that have stepped into the governor’s race may not have to give up much on Capitol Hill while trying to secure their spot on the ticket here. Some observers say Lieutenant Governor Eric Holcomb is the favorite to replace Pence on the governor’s ballot. But if that happens, both Congressman Todd Rokita and Congresswoman Susan Brooks are expected to ask to be nominated once again to run for Congress. They both withdrew from their congressional races to seek the governor’s office. Their ambitious gambles may be without great risk.

In light of the shootings of police around the country, many in the Indianapolis community are standing and rallying behind Indianapolis Metro Police officers. The concern for the officers has taken many forms such as paying for meals, warm cards and notes, and lots of hugs. Many in the community are also backing the department with the hashtag #BacktheBlue movement. Merchandise is available displaying the hashtag with proceeds going towards IMPD programs, training, and equipment. Chief Troy Riggs told Fox 59 in just the first few hours the website went online, they’ve already generated thousands of dollars of support.
The people in charge of Indiana’s public schools still can’t agree on which test school kids will take next year. Indiana is walking away from the ISTEP after this year. Superintendent of Schools Glenda Ritz wants an adaptive, online test. But Republican lawmakers want a pencil and paper, pass or fail test.

The Lieutenant Governor of Texas says the Justice Department should investigate the Black Lives Matter movement. Dan Patrick told CNN on Tuesday that he supports Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump’s suggestion that he’ll direct the Attorney General to investigate the group if he’s elected President. In an interview at the Republican National Convention, Patrick said he knows there’s distrust of police in the black community and that some police officers should be replaced.
Hollywood is mourning the loss of legendary director, producer and actor Garry Marshall. “Happy Days” star Henry Winkler thanked the show’s creator on Twitter for not only his professional life, but also his loyalty, friendship and generosity. He also called Marshall “larger than life, funnier than most, wise and the definition of friend.” Marshall is also the brother of actress, director Penny Marshall.
Out? Fox News Channel CEO Roger Ailes is reportedly negotiating his departure from the company. Reports surfaced Tuesday, hours after New York Magazine reported that Fox anchor Megyn Kelly had told investigators that she had been sexually harassed by Ailes as well. Two weeks ago, former Fox anchor Gretchen Carlson alleged in a lawsuit that she had been fired after rejecting repeated sexual advances from him.
A sign of the times? Twitter says it is permanently suspending a number of users for abuse and harassment. The social network is making the move after “Ghostbusters” actor Leslie Jones said on Monday that she was quitting the social media site because of harassment. Jones shared several abusive tweets with her 250,000 followers Monday and said she was leaving with tears and a sad heart. Twitter said in a statement Tuesday that it has seen an “uptick” in the number of accounts violating its abuse policies, and that it is enforcing those policies.

The CBS show has released a teaser of the FLOTUS taking part in the wildly-popular “Carpool Karaoke.” Later, the two are then seen singing Beyonce’s song “Single Ladies.” The full episode airs tonight. A scorcher is coming! It’s going to be hot Thursday and Friday, but Indy may miss the worst of a Heat Dome that’s expected to bake the Midwest. The National Weather Service says there aren’t any watches or warning for Indiana about the dangerous heat, yet. Forecasters expect temps in the mid-90s both days. The heat index could get close to 100.
But for today expect clouds and some sun this morning. Afternoon clouds will hang with a looming chance for showers and thunderstorms. The High: 89 degrees.
