A police chase ended in a crash and capture on the city’s south-eastside. WRTV-TV is reporting this happened Monday night near Sherman Drive and Southeastern. When the suspect didn’t stop at a stop sign and the officer tried to pull him over, that’s when this latest drama began on our city’s streets. The IMPD officer used a PIT maneuver during the chase which caused the SUV to flip to its side then right back up, but with a couple of lost tires. Inside were two children and a female passenger along with that fleeing driver who after driving until the tires gave away and hitting another car—fled on foot. Police arrested Travis Powell, 37, who now faces a battery of preliminary charges including operating while intoxicated, operating while never receiving a license, recklessness and more.
Voters will decide this fall if they want to pay an extra quarter-point on their income taxes for mass transit projects. Indianapolis city and county leaders approved a plan Monday night to add the question to the November ballot. If voters say “yes,” the tax hike could raise $56 million per year for the city’s bus system and a rapid transit project.

The 100 block of Saint Joseph Street here in downtown Indy is officially getting a name change, a move approved also at last night’s city-county meeting. Councilors Vop Osili and Joseph Simpson both spoke passionately before the council saying Amos Brown, a local legendary radio broadcaster and community activist who worked for decades here at the stations of WTLC, Hoosier Radio & TV and Radio One was most deserving because of his regard for this community. Their efforts led to a 24-0 unanimous vote to change the block’s street name to “Amos Brown Way.” So here in front of our building, the street will honor Brown, our late colleague who hosted “Afternoons With Amos” on our AM station, 1310 “The Light.” Brown passed away from a sudden heart attack last November.
One of the City-County Councilors is holding a Town Hall meeting today to discuss the vision for District 1 on the city’s far northwest side. Councilor Leroy Robinson’s meeting will address public safety, infrastructure, mass transit, and economic development and feature Mayor Joe Hogsett and other City officials. It begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Fay Biccard Glick Neighborhood Center at Crooked Creek. The center is located at 2990 West 71st Street.
Developers who want to build here in Indianapolis could soon have to add art to their projects. Indianapolis’ city council, once again, approved a plan to require developers to spend one-percent of any TIF money on art projects. Indy’s council passed a similar plan last year, but the former mayor scuttled it. Current Mayor Joe Hogsett is on board with this idea.
Indiana has a new Supreme Court justice. Indianapolis attorney Geoffrey Slaughter has been tapped to fill the seat left vacant by former Justice Brent Dickson, who retired last month. Slaughter was named yesterday by Governor Mike Pence. He’s expected to be sworn-in next month.
Don’t Drink and Drive. You’ve heard that message and police are making sure motorists know what it means. This week, police are cracking down in an attempt to stop drunk drivers from wreaking havoc here in the city and across the county. The Marion County Traffic Safety Partnership is setting up check-points and increased roving patrols in various communities. DUI: Taskforce Indiana is a year-long, state-wide grant-funded project, funded by the Governor’s Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving, focused on reducing alcohol-related crashes.

The death case of Freddie Gray heads back to court today in Baltimore. A pre-trial hearing is scheduled for one of the six Baltimore police officers charged in Gray’s death. Officer Edward Nero is facing second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and misconduct charges, and he’s expected to ask that the judge, not a jury decide his innocence or guilt. Nero’s trial is scheduled to get underway tomorrow but prosecutors want a one-day delay because they say weekend utility work in the courthouse hampered their ability to prep for the case.
West Virginia and Nebraska hold presidential primaries today. Democrats and Republicans vote in West Virginia while the Nebraska primary is a GOP contest only. As voters cast their ballots, there’s a new poll out showing Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders would do better than Hillary Clinton in the general election against likely GOP nominee Donald Trump. Clinton would also beat Trump but only by about five points.
The Justice Department is counter-suing North Carolina over the state’s controversial bathroom law. Attorney General Loretta Lynch said the law violates the U.S. Civil Rights Act by discriminating against transgender persons. She called the law state-sponsored discrimination.
A bittersweet honor for the wife of late South Carolina State Senator and Pastor Clementa Pinckney. She was awarded with his Doctorate of Ministry degree from the Wesley Theological Seminary on Monday. Pinckney was one of nine people gunned down last June at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston. Jennifer Pinckney accepted the posthumous degree at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC and recalled how much her husband had been looking forward to this day. At the time of his death, he was working on his thesis, which focused on being a minister and a public servant. President Obama also recognized Pinckney in a letter that was read during Monday’s commencement ceremony.
At least two people are dead after tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma. Funnel clouds were also reported in Iowa and Nebraska. The same system could bring more severe weather to parts of the Ohio Valley today as it moves east.
In sports…
The Indiana Fever open up the 2016 WNBA regular season on Saturday against the Dallas Wings at home. The Fever closed the preseason with an 89-69 win over the Mystics on Friday night. Indiana advanced to the WNBA Finals last year, falling to the Lynx in five games. Tipoff Saturday is scheduled at 6:00 p.m. Eastern.
Weather…
The worst of the weather is expected in southern Indiana later today, but forecasters say Indianapolis will see rain and possibly some thunderstorms. The National Weather Service says there’s more of a chance for severe weather in the southern tip of the state and into Kentucky. Indy is expected to see two inches of rain over the next 24 hours.
A few of those thunderstorms may be severe, here in the city today. The High: Around 75 degrees.
