A jury handed down a guilty verdict Thursday evening for the NYPD officer charged with the shooting death of Akai Gurley.

Officer Peter Liang is now guilty of manslaughter and official misconduct in Gurley’s shooting, which happened nearly two years ago in a dark stairwell of a public housing complex in Brooklyn. Gurley, 28, was unarmed when he was shot and killed.

Liang claimed he fired his gun accidentally when he was startled by a noise in the stairwell. He now faces up to a 15-year prison sentence for this conviction.
