Constance Baker Motley:

Born in my hometown of New Haven, Ct. Constance Baker Motley was the first African American woman to sit in the New York State Senate and the first African American woman Federal Judge for the District Court for the Southern District Court for the Southern District of New York. She remained on the bench until her death in 2005. She also made history with the breakthrough decision in 1978 ruling that a female reporter must be allowed into a Major League Baseball locker room. One of my favorite quotes for Judge Baker Motley is, “I rejected the notion that my race or sex would bar my success in life.”
