Thursday marks 30 years since African-American astronaut Ronald McNair died in the Challenger tragedy. McNair left a legacy that is an integral part of Black history by becoming the second African-American to reach outer space. “He was willing to take risks, willing to step way outside his comfort zone,” said one of his friends. “He knew you had to take risks to expand the human experience. That’s what his whole life was.” Although McNair hailed from South Carolina, Harlem was his second home. “We always had a presence there,” said his older brother Carl S.
