Good day to you on this first day of October, the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Three Indianapolis Public Schools  are on two-hour delays this morning due to a critical overnight theft. Thieves illegally entered the bus barn and stole the batteries from roughly 30 school buses that service Emma Donnan Elementary and Middle School, Manual High School, and Howe High School. The local manager for A & S Transportation said the break-in occurred between midnight and 5 a.m. Thursday morning from the barn located on South Kitley Avenue. They’ve been working feverishly this morning to get those buses up and rolling so students can be transported to and from school.

San Francisco Career Fair Helps Military Veterans Find Jobs

TODAY: Looking for a job or a career change? The City of Indianapolis is inviting job seekers to join them for an Employment Opportunity and Resource Fair today that runs until 4 p.m. This event is phase four of a workforce initiative organized by the city’s Department of Minority and Women Business Development. Organizers say employers have up to 1,000 job openings and are waiting to greet the general public at Riverside Park Family Recreation Center. Riverside is located at 2420 East Riverside Drive on the city’s near-northwest side. They ask job seekers to bring their resumes, come dressed professionally and enter from Burdsal Parkway. TODAY: Flags across the state of Indiana are flying at half-staff today in honor of former State Representative Bill Crawford. Governor Mike Pence’s office says the flag has been lowered atop the Capitol building as well. Lawmakers and fellow Hoosiers have begun to say goodbye publicly to the legendary legislator. His former colleagues received his casket at the north doors of the Statehouse at 9:30 Thursday morning. Crawford’s body will lie-in-repose in the Statehouse rotunda. The public is invited to pay their respects from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. His family will join Gov. Pence and Mrs. Pence to lay a wreath at his casket to honor him at Noon. Crawford’s memorial services are Friday at Eastern Star Church’s main sanctuary on East 30th Street beginning with a viewing at 9 a.m. and his funeral will begin at 11 a.m. Stuart Mortuary has been entrusted with his final arrangements. The Indianapolis City-County Council is set to vote on a budget to fund a full-scale body camera program and 155 new police officers. On Wednesday, a public safety committee advanced a provision spending $250,000 for the cameras. Officials say it’s just more than 12-percent of what they need to equip all officers. The budget also includes money to hire 85 more officers this year, and 70 more in 2016.

Indianapolis metro police are investigating three shootings reported overnight. One person was found shot in the back in an incident where a car was stolen on 21st and Mitthoeffer. Another person was shot in the stomach in the area of 86th and Ditch Road and police also responded to a report of someone shot in the leg on North LaSalle Street. Homicides in the city are now at staggering rates. The city is recording its 101st homicide for this year. Police say in most of the homicides, the victims and suspects know each other and some of the recent cases follow the trend.

Indiana University Police are investigating the disappearance of one of their students. Joseph William Smedley, II was reported missing on Monday after he told his sister he was leaving the country. The student does not have a passport and left his clothing behind. Although a note was found, Smedley’s family believe it was written by someone else. The family is turning to social media for help. They have established the hashtag #FindJosephSmedley and are asking the public for help.

More post-mortem shenanigans… A funeral director is accused of stealing a ring off a corpse. Greg Thayer is accused of trying to take a ring off the finger of a man he was in charge of burying. Thayer allegedly took the man’s wedding ring and pawned it after the funeral. If Thayer is found guilty in the theft he could face a year in prison and lose his funeral director’s license.

Two Jefferson High School students are under arrest for making a threat against students. The two girls are accused of writing the threat on the bathroom wall of the school’s ladies room. The sophomore and junior students were arrested on charges of disorderly conduct, threats and intimidation. School officials say the threat said there would be a school shooting this past Tuesday morning. The threat follows another incident in the same school where a male student was arrested for bringing a gun to school.

In National News…

There will be no government shutdown, at least for now. President Obama signed a short-term funding bill Wednesday after the House passed it. The bill ensures that the government remains funded through December 11. The funding extension became necessary after budget negotiations broke down in a dispute over funding Planned Parenthood.

Dozens of civilians are reportedly dead after Russian warplanes attack Syria. Fighter jets bombed areas controlled by rebels opposed to both Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and terrorist ISIS forces on Wednesday. There are opposing target stories coming out of this attack. Russia says the attacks targeted ISIS military equipment, weapons stockpiles, communications centers, and transportation resources. The rebels say all the targets were civilians and that 36 died, including children.

The scandal over Hillary Clinton’s private email server could be a lot worse. According to the various reports, Clinton received at least five emails from Russian hackers that contained malware used to take control of computers. A Clinton spokesperson says she never opened the emails or attachments, disguised as speeding tickets, and there is no evidence of a breach.

LGBT Catholics are not happy the Pope met with the Kentucky clerk who wouldn’t issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples. An official with the group Dignity USA tells The Advocate it’s deeply disappointing that Pope Francis met with Kim Davis but not with any LGBT Catholics. The group says the Pope should have told Davis not to deny the civil rights of others. The Vatican finally confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that the meeting between Davis and the Pope took place. According to the USA Today, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said he would not deny that the meeting took place but declined further comment on what took place during it.

In Sports…

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is day-to-day with an injury to his throwing shoulder. Matt Hasselbeck stepped in and took the majority of the first-team snaps in Wednesday’s practice. The Colts also made an addition to their practice squad by signing Alex Tanney earlier this week. When speaking to reporters, Luck said he expects to play in Sunday’s home game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Finally…

Jimmy Carter is turning 91 today. The former president has been keeping a busy schedule despite his cancer diagnosis. He’s getting his third cancer treatment this week but is still expected to teach his Sunday School class at his church this weekend. Carter also said he would be making a trip to Nepal in November on behalf of Habitat for Humanity, a charity that he’s dedicated himself to over many years.
