On Tuesday, we told you, “Don’t look for Blue Bell ice cream on your local store shelves. It won’t be there because it’s been recalled.” Now we’re learning there’s a lot more to the story of Listeria contamination at this Texas-based ice cream company that produced a favorite tasty treat for you and your family.

It turns out, the listeria outbreak linked to Blue Bell ice cream has been sickening consumers for five years. The CDC is telling people not to eat Blue Bell ice cream products and throw away cartons from your freezer because they’re now saying the outbreak has left three people dead and sent at least seven people to the hospital. Officials with the CDC told NBC News tests have linked listeria bacteria from two factories to six of those 10 cases dating back to 2010.

The Texas company announced a voluntary recall of all of their products on Monday. Blue Bell’s CEO says this recall is the right thing to do and the only way they can make sure their products are safe. The company said they hoped to return products to store freezers in a limited supply soon, however now that it’s been confirmed the issues are wider ranging, we’ll have to wait and see.
