QUEEN LATIFAH said she wanted to play iconic Blues singer, Bessie Smith, and her dream is now more than reality. Latifah’s dream and acting/singing chops are heading to a television set powered by HBO Films on Saturday, May 16 at 8 p.m. Eastern. “Bessie” was written by Rees and Horton Foote, focusing on Smith’s transformation from a young and struggling singer into “The Empress of the Blues.” Smith was a powerhouse entertainer in the 1920s. She indeed was one of the most successful recording artists of her era.  Others to look for in this project are Indy’s own, Mike Epps who plays a bootlegger that was one of Smith’s love interests and an alum of the afternoon drive here at WTLC-FM on her former syndicated radio show, Mo’Nique, playing none-other-than blues legend Ma Rainey.
