Selma may have gotten the shaft at the 87th Academy Awards for major nominations but scored a huge win at the night’s telecast. John Legend and Common took home the Oscar for Best Original Song. The duo took home the coveted award right after they performed the song and brought the audience to tears with their acceptance speech. Taking the stage, Legend told the crowd and viewers at home:
Selma’ is now because the struggle for justice is now. We know that the voting rights that they fought for 50 years ago is being compromised in this country today.
