Comedian/actor George Lopez stars in the new movie, Spare Parts, in theaters this weekend. But he’s got another hot gig on the horizon – he’s hosting the World Dog Awards, airing tonight at 8 p.m. on the CW. Expect for an interesting red carpet, as everyone from Paris Hilton to Nene Leakes is walking the red carpet with their dogs.

“It’s a cute little idea. Dogs are kind of abused. When I had a dog growing up, he was never allowed in the house, he never had any clothes, he never ate from a plate,” Lopez says. “One time my grandmother said ‘Take this clothes hanger and make a lock and lock that dog on the side of the house.’”

His current dog, a rescue, lives a much more cushy existence, we’re sure.

The real-life story behind Spare Parts is the four Latino kids who won a college robotics competition some years ago using salvaged items. Lopez plays the teacher.

“These movies can get a little sugary,” Lopez says.  “This one’s not. This one’s very dramatic and it’s got a lot of humor and the response through social media has been very high. I’m excited to see how it does this weekend.”

Lopez stays working and he says the secret to his success is simple.

“Divorce,” he says.

So he’s also on the  Black and Brown tour, which is heading out with Lopez, Mike Epps, Charlie Murphy, Eddie Griffin, Cedric The Entertainer and D.L. Hughley.”

“In these times, you really need to laugh. These guys came together to do a show to raise the funds to finish Richard Pryor’s statue in Peoria. We had such a good time, we’re going to take it out on tour.”
