Aunt Jemima’s Family Wants The Dough$
The Original Aunt Jemima, Nancy Green, was born into slavery on 1834 in Kentucky and was the first face of the brand in 1890. Aunt Jemima has evolved over the years including many other African American women. Green’s relatives are suing for $2 billion and a future share of the brand for their family and the other faces of Aunt Jemima’s relatives.
The owner of Quaker Oats has released a statement saying that Aunt Jemima was never real and she’s just a symbol for the brand.
“The image symbolizes a sense of caring, warmth, hospitality and comfort and is neither based on, nor meant to depict any one person,” according to a statement from Quaker Oats, a subsidiary of PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP). “While we cannot discuss the details of pending litigation, we do not believe there is any merit to this lawsuit.”
On the company website it states that in 1889 the creators of the mix were Chris Rutt and Charles Underwood.
It is very interesting how Quaker Oats has made this comment when the Jim Crow Museum in Michigan says otherwise. In the Museum there is a display of the evolving Aunt Jemima in the “Hateful Things” exhibit and it shows the history behind the brand and racism from almost 100 years ago.
