In a brief visit to Indianapolis former Secretary of State Colin Powell urged Indianapolis’ Black community and in fact the entire community to get involved and engaged in the lives of our youth and young people. Powell, the former Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and top military adviser  for several Presidents spoke in a very limited news conference just before being the final speaker of the 2013-2014 Stewart Speakers Series. I asked Secretary Powell about America’s Promise and effort he launched in 1997 to help bring together non profits, community groups, businesses and institutions to work together to make the promise of America accessible to all young people. Colin Powell talked about the importance of engaging youth and for communities to rally together as mentors as volunteers to help provide that support to help youth succeed. Powell was also blunt in saying that the large number of Black children raised in single parent homes must be reduced and that young girls should wait until their at least age 20 to 25 before having children.
