A U.S. postal worker took a wrong turn Friday and ended up in an icy river. Except, he was driving on a suburban street in New Jersey at the time.
Several roads near Shrewsbury River in Monmouth Beach flooded late last week thanks to the winter storm that’s pummeling the Northeast. Blizzard conditions caused water levels to rise higher than usual at high tide.
Mailman Joe Sposito discovered this during his regular rounds Friday when icy water from the river rose quickly around his truck, WABC reports.
Resident Carrie Tenuto, was shoveling a path in front of her house when she tried to warn the driver, but it was too late.
“I saw him and I started screaming for him to stop and he just plowed into the river,” Tenuto told CBS New York.
Fire crews were dispatched to rescue Sposito, who was reportedly stuck in four feet of icy water.
The rescue team used a larger vehicle to free the postal worker and the mail, and the truck was towed away later.
