State, School Corporations Suing IRS  

 

The State of Indiana and 15 public school corporations are suing the IRS over part of the Affordable Care Act.  On Tuesday, Attorney General Greg Zoeller said he’s trying to stop the “employer mandate” part of Obamacare because the federal government doesn’t have the authority to impose tax penalties on state entities, such as schools.  The law penalizes employers that fail to provide health insurance if they have more than 50 employees working 30 or more hours per week.

 Shutdown Impact On Indiana  

 

Indiana is near the bottom of the list for states most affected by the government shutdown.  A report from “Wallet Hub” ranks the state 50th in the nation. The survey shows disruptions to federal aid programs will be especially difficult for students and seniors who may suffer the loss of Social Security payments as a consequence. The most affected state is Virginia while the least is Iowa.  

Winter Gas Bills Will Be Higher  

 

Make plans, your Winter gas bills will likely be higher this year according to Citizens Energy Group. Officials say the price of natural gas is up which means the average bill from November through March is estimated at 569-dollars. That is up 9-dollars from last year. 

 

Food Stamp Assistance Decreasing  

 

If your family receives food stamp assistance, you’ll notice smaller deposits soon. Extra benefits from the 2009 federal stimulus bill are set to expire on November 1st.  Officials say a one-person household will lose eleven-dollars a month, while a family of four will notice a 36-dollar decrease.
