A sleep expert says Michael Jackson’s reliance on propofol to get more sleep did the opposite of what he thought it would do. Testifying in Jackson’s wrongful death case in Los Angeles Friday, Dr. Charles Czeisler told the court the pop star suffered from almost total sleep deprivation through his use of the anesthetic. Jackson’s personal physician Dr. Conrad Murray administered propofol to help the singer sleep during his preparation for a comeback concert series. But Czeisler says that’s not propofol’s primary function. He says it actually “dissipates the drive for sleep,” “leading to a massive sleep deficiency.” The Harvard doctor says the symptoms witnesses testified to observing in Jackson were consistent with what you might expect to see in someone suffering from lack of sleep over a long period of time.

Witnesses shared that Jackson exhibited sings of weight loss, paranoia, anxiety and balance. They also said he needed a TelePrompter for lyrics to songs that he had been singing for years. Jackson’s mother Katherine Jackson is suing concert promoters AEG Live for negligence in its hiring of Dr. Conrad Murray to supervise the singer. AEG says it was Jackson who handpicked Murray to be his personal doctors.Tuesday, June 25th, marks the fourth anniversary of Michael Jackson’s death.
