LATEST UPDATE–Mike Rice has been fired as Rutgers Basketball Coach

Rutgers basketball coach Mike Rice is described as having “indomitable courtside manner” on the team’s official website. If the school opts to keep him on staff, it might need to add menacing and abusive to that description.

In video footage obtained by ESPN’s Outside The Lines, Rice can be seen shoving players and throwing basketballs at them from close range. According to OTL, portions of this footage were behind Rice’s three-game suspension in December 2012. At the time, Rutgers Athletic director Tim Pernetti was vague about the reasons for the brief ban.

“I was made aware of some things within the last couple of weeks. We commenced a thorough, lengthy and fair investigation and this was the result of that investigation,” Pernetti said, via The Associated Press. “There was obviously some things that are not to the Rutgers’ standard that we evaluated and decided upon.”

According to the OTL report, there are “several dozen hours” footage of practices from 2010-12 depicting abusive behavior. Rice

reportedly calls his players “fa**ots” and “mother****ers” among other insults.
