Work at being best friends with your partner. This is one of the most important elements to appreciating your relationship. Think about your friendships outside of your relationship. You may not always agree with your friends, but you respect their innermost thoughts and feelings. Sometimes people forget that their partner should be their very best friend.

Remember that your relationship should be a safe place for each of you to fall, without facing judgment. You are both human and will make mistakes along the way. Forgive and move on.

Make a spontaneous date. Nothing makes sparks fly like a spontaneous moment. And often, as time and the responsibilities of life wears on in our relationships, we forget how important the spontaneity is and it is lost. So, whether it is a romantic picnic in the park or a night at a hotel, do something outside of the norm.

Talk. It sounds so simple, yet people often forget how important communication is. Communication goes beyond talk about the bills or the kids. Communication is talking about the hard stuff, talking about the fun stuff, talking about the past, and talking about the future.

Discuss where your life has taken you. Laugh about the fun times and mourn the difficult together. Dream new dreams together and talk about your innermost thoughts and feelings. Be vulnerable. Be open. Be honest. You will be amazed at how much closer you feel.

Fight fair. Fighting is a part of being a couple. You will never agree on everything all of the time. And, as perfect as your mate may be for you, chances are, they will let you down at some point or another. Remember that you both have feelings and hurting the other person to get back will only add tension and build bigger barriers between you. Avoid calling names.

Respect each other enough to allow the other to speak their mind, even if you don’t agree. And, at the end of it all, remember that you are two different people. You don’t have to always agree but you do have to learn how to compromise and sometimes even sacrifice.
