The Indianapolis Colts hired Pep Hamilton as their new offensive coordinator, and he will be reunited with quarterback Andrew Luck and tight end Coby Fleener.
Hamilton, whose official title for Stanford was “Andrew Luck Director of Offense,” succeeds Bruce Arians, who accepted the Arizona Cardinals’ head-coaching job Thursday.
After one season as Stanford’s wide receivers coach in 2010, Hamilton was elevated to offensive coordinator in 2011. The Cardinal averaged 43.2 points with Luck at quarterback in his final year and then rolled to a 12-2 season in 2012 that ended with a Rose Bowl victory. After the 2011 season, Luck was drafted No. 1 overall by the Colts.
Hamilton also interviewed with the New York Jets for their offensive coordinator job, and said he spent more than four hours interviewing with the University of Oregon about the Ducks’ head coaching job.
“It’s been somewhat of an adventurous week for me,” Hamilton said. “But I’m excited and of course fired up about having an opportunity to work with a great organization like the Indianapolis Colts. I’m looking forward to getting settled in and getting started watching film and getting the playbook in place and getting ready to roll for the offseason.”
Hamilton’s NFL experience includes four seasons with the Chicago Bears as quarterbacks coach and one year with the Jets as an offensive assistant.
He believes being reunited with Luck will certainly smooth the transition process back to the pros.
“I think he’ll be a tremendous asset in helping me to make the transition to the Colts. And just making sure that as I install what my offense, obviously he’s had a couple years of experience in it and it makes a huge difference when the quarterback is for the most part well versed in the offense” Hamilton said. “Coby Fleener and some of the guys that may have played in the West Coast offense and with other organizations, they’ll recognize some of the terminology and we should be able to hit the ground running.”
