UPDATE 7:40pm: 106.7 WTLC and TLCNaptown.com can now confirm that Dr. Eugene White will retire from Indianapolis Public Schools in April.

In a Tuesday night board meeting White said,”I want to inform you that at the end of the workday on Friday, April 5, I will retire from the IPS school district.”

Dr. White announced his plan, calling his choice to end his career at IPS a “heartfelt decision.”

The board accepted White’s request to retire.

The story was prematurely broken by The Indianapolis Star mid Tuesday morning, when an article was published saying White would “step down” from his post as The Superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools. The Star cited sources that White would have a closed door meeting with board members, prior to the regularly scheduled Tuesday night board meeting at 7pm.

The Star’s reporting lead to a firestorm of misinformation. Taking The Star’s word, news outlets to believed that White would step down or which was found to be untrue, “resign.”

WTLC’s Amos Brown reported that trusted sources told members of the media in confidence, that some sort of announcement involving the “retirement” of Dr. White, would be made at some point. However there was no indication that such an announcement would be made today.

Brown told his listeners on Afternoons With Amos, that White likely would leave IPS in the near future, but would announce his departure in his own time, reporting at 2:18pm, that Dr. White would  announce his retirement at the Board Meeting. Resignation stories reported were, according to Brown not correct.

White has been the leader of IPS since 2005 and is under contract to keep that position through 2015.

Kelly Vaughn will have the developments on this story, starting tomorrow morning during the Tom Joyner Morning Show from 6-10a on your radio at 106.7 WTLC and on TLCNaptown.com.

This story will be updated as new information becomes available.
