Inmate escape attempt stopped

(Indianapolis)  —  Two escape attempts from the Marion County Jail were stopped by deputies yesterday.  The facility was placed on lockdown when it was determined inmates damaged windows and cement in two cells.  Deputies spent yesterday looking for any possible items that were used to try to spring at least one inmate out of jail.

House Democrats agree to stop walkouts

(Indianapolis)  —  Indiana House Democrats say they will end their walkouts at the Statehouse in exchange for an agreement by Republicans to slow down on right to work legislation and delay debating on the measure in the full House until Tuesday. Last year, House Democrats left Indiana for several weeks and did not return to work until Bosma agreed to kill the right to work legislation. In other legislative news, a smoking ban is making moves through the Statehouse.  The Statehouse health committee approved the measure yesterday to ban smoking in bars and most public places.  Private clubs, casinos, retail tobacco shops and cigar and hookah bars would be exempt. 

Indiana right to work opponents bring in outside help

(Indianapolis)  —  Indiana unions are reaching out to workers from Oklahoma to help fight efforts to make Indiana a right to work state. Oklahoma is the most recent state to enact the controversial measure. One union member from Oklahoma stated she and a group of co-workers were all fired, with their former boss saying the right to work law was the reason.  Governor Mitch Daniels said in his State of the State speech earlier this week he believes making Indiana a right to work state will help bring in more businesses and jobs. 

Healthcare program files exposed

(Indianapolis) — Officials with a non-profit health care program are warning its members of a security leak. MDwise officials said the personal records  of as many as 2700 people covered by the Healthy Indiana Plan, Care Select and Hoosier Healthwise health programs are involved. The information leaked contained the members’ names, addresses and Medicaid numbers in addition to doctors’ names and addresses. The accessed files did not contain social security numbers or financial information. MDWise officials say the problem has been fixed, but  advised members to contact credit reporting agencies as a safeguard.   

Murder suspect makes first court appearance

(Shelbyville)  —  The man accused of killing his 74-year-old landlord made his first court appearance Wednesday.  William Goode has been charged with murder and burglary in the stabbing death of his landlord Genevieve Kelly in her home last week.  Shelby County Prosecutor Kent Apsley said he wants  Goode charged as a habitual offender due to other felony convictions.

Colts announce new general manager

(Indianapolis)  —  Ryan Grigson, formerly with the Philadelphia Eagles as general manager has been named the new general manager of the Indianapolis Colts.  Grigson takes over for Chris Polian after Polian and his father were both fired at the end of the Colts’ 2-and-14 season.  

Indiana Pacers defeat Atlanta Hawks

(Indianapolis)  —  Danny Granger scored a game high 24 points to take the Indiana Pacers to victory row with a 96-84 win over the Atlanta Hawks.  Indiana outscored the Hawks 27-9 in the third quarter to take the team to  7-and-3 on the year.  The Hawks were led by Josh Smith’s 16 points and seven rebounds.
