Pay Attention

  • Notice something interesting about someone? Ask about it. Is that woman wearing a pair of shoes you love, or does she have on an interesting piece of jewelry? That can be a great conversation starter. If there’s something going on in the news that everyone is talking about or a TV show people are addicted to, get the ball rolling with some conversation about those things. Just take the initiative.
  • Listen

  • Pay attention to what the other person says; don’t let your mind wander. Genuinely listening and engaging can provide opportunities for you to ask questions and find out more about someone. Ask questions that require more than a “yes” or “no” answer to keep the conversation going.
  • Similar Interests

  • Hang out in places where you know you’ll find someone with similar interests. If you have a dog, take him to the dog park and meet other dog owners. Go to a book club to meet other readers. Meet other parents at the playground or park. Watch a live band that you enjoy and strike up a musical conversation with another concert patron.
  • Say “Hello”

  • Sometimes starting a conversation can be as simple as just saying “hi” to a new person. Talk about the environment you are both in, or bring up an opinion about an issue you are passionate about to see what the other person says.
