Eminem sues Meta for $109 million, says they used his music without license

Eminem’s music company, Eight Mile Style, is suing Meta, alleging that the social media company allowed users to access his songs without proper permission. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Michigan, claims that Meta stored, reproduced, and distributed Eminem’s music without a license. Eight Mile Style owns and controls 243 compositions from the legendary Detroit rapper, including songs like “Lose Yourself,” “The Real Slim Shady,” and “Forgot About Dre.”

The lawsuit alleges that Meta’s various applications, including Original Audio and Reels Remix, feature different elements that serve as a means to “allow and encourage its users to steal Eight Mile Style’s music” for use in their content, without proper attribution or license.” It goes on to claim that the songs have been used in millions of videos and streamed billions of times.

While Meta removed some songs after earlier complaints, the company allegedly “reproduced and stored unauthorized unlicensed copies.”

In a statement to People Magazine, a Meta spokesperson stated, “Meta has licenses with thousands of partners around the world and an extensive global licensing program for music on its platforms. Meta had been negotiating in good faith with Eight Mile Style, but rather than continue those discussions, Eight Mile Style chose to sue.”
