Step 1

Ensure that there is enough closet space for both of you. You may have three times the clothing that he does, but you must make sure that you discuss how to share the closet space given in order to live together in peace.

  • Step 2

Designate space where each of you can go to be alone. It can be a chair in the corner of the study, the study itself or an extra bedroom where you can have the quiet time you need. Even if you are dealing with a very small apartment, a separate place for each of you will make living together more enjoyable.

  • Step 3

Decide in the beginning how you are going to pay bills. Open an account that both of you can put money into, or pool money at the beginning of each month for bills. Discuss between the two of you whose name certain bills will be open under and decide who will be responsible for paying mutual bills.

  • Step 4

Share the cleaning responsibilities. If one of you does most of the cooking, discuss the possibility of designating the other person to clean up after. Make a chart of household chores and be clear about who is in charge of each major and minor cleaning task.

  • Step 5

Come to a mutual decision about furniture. Furnishing an apartment or house can be easy if only one of you has their heart set on using their own furniture. When both of you have things you would like to use, discuss the furnishings and compromise when needed.

  • Step 6

Tell your living partner how you like to have things kept. If you are a neat freak, then be completely honest about that fact. Share your opinions on sloppiness and work toward making your space as compatible with each of you as possible. This will help you live together without bursts of anger or frustration on the mess in the kitchen.

  • Step 7

Live together peaceably by setting boundaries for the air conditioner. Whether you have a firm opinion about the air conditioner due to a low or high body temperature or you don’t want to spend an exorbitant amount of money each month on the electricity bill, deciding on a mutually satisfactory temperature range is important.
