A comedian who became one of the leading voices in the battle for civil rights is dead. Dick Gregory passed away Saturday night in Washington, DC, according to a statement by his family. Gregory began his career as a comedian while serving in the military in the 1950s. He became a prominent figure in the Civil Rights Movement of the ’60s. Dick Gregory was 84.
