Just as word that an anti-Trump rally is being planned for Saturday at 5 p.m. here in Indianapolis on Monument Circle comes word that extra security is being placed at the governor’s mansion at 46th and Meridian Streets. Vice President-elect Mike Pence is expected to return to Indiana today. (See the fanfare planned below.) Officials say specific plans are classified, but may include road closures around Pence’s home, as well as a restriction of air space.

Regarding the Indianapolis “Trump Resistance Rally,” it’s being organized on Facebook with the goal of letting “the new head of states know that Indiana will not tolerate any form of bigotry, oppression, and exploitation” from its leaders. It’s in lockstep with many across the country, like a prominent one in New York City at Trump Tower Wednesday night that drew thousands. Protests were also reported in Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Dallas, Portland, Seattle and Oakland. Indiana State Police here say as long as the rally is peaceful on Saturday, they won’t get involved.

The fifth suspect in the Richmond Hill explosion is taking a plea deal. Glenn Hults was initially charged with conspiracy to commit arson, but pleaded guilty Wednesday to a lesser felony charge of assisting a criminal.  Prosecutors say Hults knew of the plot to set fire to Monserrate Shirley’s home in November of 2012. That blast damaged dozens of homes and killed two people.

Schools in Washington Township are getting about $180-million for new schools and another $45-million. Voters approved two-tax increases on election night. Homeowners will pay about $300 more per year. School leaders say they’ll use the money to improve at least two schools and alleviate overcrowding. Teachers in Washington Township can also expect some raises.

The Marion County Traffic Court is closed until further notice. The doors were locked on Wednesday without warning, citing “mechanical issues.”  Those who were to appear in court Wednesday were told their appointment would be rescheduled. Any citation payment due then was given a one-day extension until Thursday.
