Indianapolis is closing in on 110 murders this year. Metro Police say two people died over the weekend marking the 108th and 109th homicides of the year in the city. The latest deaths came after a string of shootings early Saturday morning on the northwest side. Investigators think the shootings may all be related.

Murder has impacted the black community, not exclusively but historically, many times literally at the hands of a lynch mob. Check out my “Access Indy with Kim Wells” interview with the author of the book Beyond the Rope: The Impact of Lynching on Black Culture and Memory… Dr. Karlos K. Hill and I talk lynching and the horrible practice’s impact on our lives– from lynching’s history in the past -to- police action shootings in this modern era -to- the movements to stop them both. Metro Police said two teenagers who rode a jet ski over the Broad Ripple Dam are “lucky.”  The teens, a 17-year-old and 14-year-old were on the White River Sunday when the current took them over the dam. The jet ski stayed upright and the girls were able to get it to the river bank. The Department of Natural Resources said “somebody was smiling down on them.”

Indiana State Police are investigating how an alligator got to the Interstate. That’s where he was found and officers were called Sunday afternoon to southbound I-465 near mile marker 48 to get him. The two-foot alligator was alive when officers arrived. Troopers called it in and one trooper picked up the animal to keep it from running into traffic but the gator died from its injuries before animal control arrived on the scene. Officials say the alligator likely fell out of, or was tossed, from a moving vehicle. They believe someone improperly discarded a domesticated reptile and they want to know who. They’re asking for your help. If you know anything about who may have owned this alligator, they want you to give them a call at 317-899-8577.

Construction is beginning on two new roundabouts in Carmel. They’re both on Carey Road. One is at 136th Street and the other is at Hawthorne Drive. The road closures are expected to last about 45 days.

Speaking of closures…East Washington Street had some problems with lane closure during Monday morning’s commute due to the partial collapse of a building. Emergency crews worked to get the scene cleaned up at the site of the old Irving Theatre on East Washington Street near Ritter Avenue. That building has stood since the early 1900’s and now houses Antiques by Jack and Jill. The facade of the building’s roof hit the sidewalk below blocking it and a portion of the street.

Investigation Continues Into Bombing In New York's Chelsea Neighborhood

Source: Drew Angerer / Getty

Former NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton says there’s a real possibility that the explosion incidents in New York and New Jersey this weekend are related. The FBI is questioning five people in connection with Saturday night’s bombing in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan. They stopped them in a car and found damning evidence during a search. The Feds are (at this press time) seeking a New Jersey man for questioning, though there are some unconfirmed reports that he may now be in custody. The FBI says he’s 28-year-old Ahmad Khan Rahami who was born in Afghanistan but is a U.S. citizen living in Elizabeth, New Jersey. This latest development comes hours after five pipe bombs were found at the train station in Elizabeth. The explosion in New York injured more than two-dozen people.

(Updated at 11:55a) ……………

Chelsea bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami is now in custody and two New Jersey police officers were wounded after a reported shootout with him. The Mayor of Elizabeth Chris Bollwage has confirmed to the press, one police officer was shot in the hand, and another was hit in the vest in Linden, New Jersey. The FBI has been at the scene of Rahami’s apartment in Elizabeth, about a block away from where several pipe bombs were found at a train station. Authorities had been looking for Rahami in connection with Saturday’s bomb blast in a Manhattan neighborhood that injured 29 people.

President Obama

President Barack Obama is scheduled to make a statement during a press conference late on Monday morning. He’s expected to address these weekend bombings and a mass stabbing incident at a Minnesota shopping mall. The President is in New York for this week’s annual fall meetings of the United Nations.

The government is moving New York real estate heir and murder suspect Robert Durst to a federal prison here in Indiana.  The 73-year-old Durst’s attorney wants to block the move so Durst can stand trial for murder in Los Angeles. Durst is accused of killing his friend, Susan Berman, a writer who was found dead in her L.A. home in 2000. He was the subject of an HBO documentary and is suspected in the disappearance of his wife more than 30 years ago. Durst was found not guilty in the 2001 murder and dismemberment of a Texas neighbor in 2003. He pleaded guilty to a weapons charge in New Orleans earlier this year.

Speaking of murder…an FX miniseries took center stage at Sunday night’s Primetime EMMY’s. “The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” took the Emmy for Outstanding Limited Series. It seemed like Emmy voters couldn’t get enough of this series about the O.J. Simpson murder trial.

In Sports…

The Colts are adding another loss to their record. They fell to the Denver Broncos Sunday 34-20 during their second game of the regular season. The first loss was their season opener against the Detroit Lions last Sunday.

Go Girl!!!! Tamika Catchings scored 16 points in her final regular season game Sunday as the Fever rolled the Wings, 83-60, at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The team and the fans celebrated Catchings and her retirement, that’s coming up at season’s end. But, it’s not over…The Fever open the playoffs on Wednesday as they host the Phoenix Mercury in a single elimination round. The winner will then face the Chicago Sky. Fans will have at least one more time to ‘watch her work.’
