Hair is such an individual process, so instead of purchasing products, or in addition to, you decide to make your own.
Feeding your hair the exact mixture of what it needs has many benefits, including growth, thickness, and overall health. However, did you know that each oil has specific properties?
Some oils are penetrants, absorbing into your hair and providing moisture. Some oils are hydrating (not to be confused with moisturizing) and other oils are sealants (locking in the hydration and moisture into your hair). If you apply a sealant oil first, then a moisturizing one, you aren’t benefitting from the properties of the latter.
We break down some popular oils so your next DIY can be successful!
Coconut oil is the holy grail of oils. It’s good for your hair, skin, nails, and even digestion. This oil penetrates. Use it for hydration. Apply it after showering, or to provide more hydration for your hair when you are manipulating it. Also, the smell is so delightful.
**EDITORS NOTE** Coconut oil is the only oil that moisturizes your hair.
There is a reason so many of your favorite beauty brands use this powerhouse of an ingredient. Olive oil hydrates. It’s used in products to make your hair silky and smooth. Use this before you shampoo, or apply heat for a killer hot-oil treatment that will provide soft tresses.
Many people love the sweet smell of almond oil and use it as a fragrance in their mixtures. This oil is a sealant, locking in moisture. This oil is also great for thinning hair. Apply a warm tablespoon of almond oil in your hair after a shower, and not only will it lock in the moisture, but it will fill your hair with magnesium and zinc, two properties that help with hair loss.
Jojoba oil is the closest molecular structure to sebum, the natural oil of the scalp. This oil is perfect for hydrating because it’s 98 percent monounsaturated fats and two percent saturated fats. It can assist in shrinkage too, which happens to curly hair after its been wet.
