As HELLO BEAUTIFUL previously reported, The Daily Show’s Larry Wilmore made some of the guests at Saturday’s White House Correspondent’s Dinner incredibly uncomfortable when he called President Barack Obama the n-word during his speech.
His remarks also caused a storm on Twitter, with white and Black Republicans claiming to be offended by the slur along with Rev. Al Sharpton calling it in “bad taste” and Washington Post columnist Jonathan Capehart writing that it “was as shocking as it was disrespectful.”
But on Monday, the White House seemed a lot less offended than those might have expected, the Washington Post reported. Press Secretary Josh Earnest said that POTUS “appreciated the spirit of Mr. Wilmore’s expressions on Saturday night.”
He added, “Any comedian who’s signed up to follow President Obama at the White House correspondents’ dinner is assuming one of the most difficult tasks in comedy. Just by the nature of the engagement, that’s a tough job, following the president of the United States.”
“It’s not the first time in the Monday after the correspondents’ dinner, that some people have observed that the comedian at the dinner crossed the line,” he concluded.
Serving as the entertainment portion at the unofficial “nerd prom,” Wilmore took no prisoners as he threw incredible shade at the mainstream media for their shoddy reporting on this year’s presidential election thus far. But he also got sentimental, reflecting on how inspiring it’s been to watch a Black man be elected twice to be this nation’s leader. It was these comments that prompted Wilmore to end with speech with the now infamous line, “So, Mr. President, if I’m going to keep it 100: Yo, Barry, you did it, my n—–. You did it.”
It’s important to note that President Obama hugged Wilmore afterwards, perhaps proving he knew it was coming and wasn’t mad about it at all.
What do you think? Was Wilmore on point or completely out of line?
